Highlighting transmission variants of cultural importance The internationally best known and most successful version of Büchner’s work is the Wozzeck-libretto of Alban Berg’s opera. When Berg wrote his music in 1925, he followed a printed version of the text which had been “arranged” and “enriched” by the Austrian writer Karl Emil Franzos on the basis of Büchner’s original manuscripts. We believe that this “arrangement”, published in 1879 is a most illuminating example of textual changes that occur in the process of literary transmission.

Different versions of one work are sometimes printed synoptically, with the first version on the left and the second version on the right. There are several synoptic editions of Werther’s Leiden on the market in Germany; another and more elaborate example is the synoptic publication of two versions of Goethe’s drama Götz von Berlichingen. These editions are certainly useful. Since, however, they force the interested reader to compare the two versions word by word and line by line, they still leave something to be desired.

The following example (Figure 8) is the beginning of the murder scene. ‘Hollow’ print indicates Franzos’ own inventions or at least alterations. Asterisks are used for omissions, [ ] for authentic Büchner text that is, however, taken from a different scene or a different place in the drama. The words set in normal antiqua print — a clear minority — are the ones that Büchner had in fact written in his manuscript. Since we have the manuscripts at our disposal it might seem fair to say that Franzos’ variants are of no editorial importance, and yet this statement is not accurate.
