But Biya proved to be quite independent, quickly taking control of the major elements of power. He also took steps to restore the freedom of the press and to quell the secret police, and there was talk of reforming the electoral and party systems. However, the machinery for repression was turned off rather than dismantled. These tentative steps towards democracy were crushed in April 1984 when a serious coup d'état in support of Ahidjo was attempted. The immediate needs of security led to the reopening of a period of repression.

Four hundred recipes are provided for preparing primary ingredients such as bananas, rice, fish and meat. This is followed by a presentation of the customs and manners concerning the preparation of food in various provinces. Also included are a list of recipes and the specific ingredients utilized in each province. Hans H. Wellisch is Professor emeritus at the College of Library and Information Services, University of Maryland. He was President of the American Society of Indexers and was a member of the International Federation for Documentation. He is the author of numerous articles and several books on indexing and abstracting, and has published The Conversion of Scripts and Indexing and Abstracting: an International Bibliography, and Indexing from A to Z. He also contributes frequently to Journal of the American Society for Information Science, The Indexer and other professional journals.
