The results from the archaeologically investigated Viking-Age settlements of Schuby, in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg (Kühn 1986), Kosel, in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde (Meier and Reichstein 1984; Meier 1994), and Winning, in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg (Meier 1998), which turned up only a few longhouses and many small pit-houses, suggest manual rather than agricultural production (Meier 1994, 193; 1998, 123 et seq).
