Despite one hundred years of colonial and neocolonial relationship and exchange between the Philippines and the United States, the Philippines is virtually obscured in American studies and in American educational institutions. ” As Kaplan states in her introductory essay to Cultures of United States Imperialism: If the importance of culture has gone unrecognized in historical studies of American imperialism, the role of empire has been virtually ignored in the study of American culture.
