This school was founded on April 1, 1868 to train freed slaves. After finishing Hampton in 1896 with a degree in practical training as a printer, he returned to the Savannah suburb of Woodville and began working part time as a printer and a schoolteacher. Realizing the importance of knowing the law, in particular the protection it offered to African Americans, Abbott pursued a law degree in 1897 at Kent College of Law in Chicago. He received his degree in 50 ✦ INTO THE NEW CENTURY ✦ 1899, the only African American in his class.

They moved to Kansas, where he attended public schools. There Anthony had a chance that his parents never did—to go to school and learn to read and write. Overton worked hard and went on to receive a degree in law from Washburn Law School in Topeka, Kansas. Soon after being admitted to the Kansas Bar, he was appointed to the municipal court bench in Topeka. Despite his success, he was not happy with his career in law and decided to start a business. In 1898, Overton moved from Topeka to Kansas City, Missouri.

New Bedford, Massachusetts, was her home, but Pleasant began traveling to the South and bringing slaves back to freedom. She used many disguises to enter plantations and helped hundreds of slaves escape. She would meet slaves along the way and tell them about escaping. Plantation owners hated Pleasant for what she was doing and tried to stop her, even offering rewards for her capture. By 1851, life was dangerous for Mary Pleasant. With slavers on her trail, she moved to New Orleans. She had remarried and went to live with the family of her new husband, John James Pleasance.
