The methodology is thus not only able to reach power savings but also to allow the data center to apply demand response management. 6 Conclusion In this paper, a methodology was described that allows the data center to improve its energy efficiency by taking into account the IT hardware (servers) and the infrastructure devices (UPS, cooling) when finding VM allocations. Summarized, the methodology described in this paper can be applied (1) to save power by applying a minimum energy state while keeping up flexibility for future load boosts; (2) apply demand response management; (3) be able to immediately react to emergencies (for example cooling failures) or other incidents; (4) data center internal regulation of power consumption to prevent penalties (especially in co-location data centers).

Our research partly bases on these results. In [11], the authors propose the idea to combine a data center with a local power network that includes renewable energy sources.

They also present financial evaluations to determine, at which point the data center can benefit from these methods. Modeling of thermal behavior of data center components, especially of servers, has been researched before. In [30], the thermal load of processors and micro controllers is considered. Cochran et al. [8] handles thermal predictions of processors and combines it with a Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) technique. Much of the fundamental research regarding thermal modeling of data centers was done in [19, 23].
