This commemorative envelope was from the “First Mail Dispatch” sent out from the new post office on January 16, 1938. On that day, all outgoing mail was stamped with this logo. For several years, Aberdeen city officials leased office space in the Brown County Courthouse after its 1904 opening. In 1911, Aberdeen adopted a mayor/commission form of government and replaced its previous justice of the peace system with a municipal court, and the city fathers felt it was time for city government to have its own home.

In 1907, Aberdeen had its first hard-surfaced street when five blocks on Main Street from the Milwaukee tracks to Fifth Avenue were paved with creosote soaked wood blocks, which were installed over a bed of sand and concrete. After the blocks were placed, the street was tarred and covered with more sand. This worker is preparing this section of the street for such paving. These creosote blocks served the city for nearly 30 years. Aberdeen Main Street in 1910, is pictured here showing the intersection of South Fourth Avenue.

By 1909 when this photo of Third Avenue looking west was taken, Aberdeen’s residential area had spread well away from the Main Street business district. This shows an established neighborhood well-shaded by maturing trees. Aberdeen was a railroad town from the beginning. Here is a 1909 photo of a neighborhood built by workers on the various rail lines near the wholesale district north and east of the Brown County Courthouse,which is visible in the background.
