Liang Bua must always have been a special place, and for the last 10,000 years the dead have been placed here with ceremony. From that time, local inhabitants have carried out multistaged rituals for disposal of the dead. The bones of the deceased were collected and bundled together, smeared with ochre, adorned with ornaments, such as marine shell necklaces, and cached in the cave. During the Neolithic period, when cereal cultivation, pottery and ground adzes were introduced to Flores about 4,000 years ago, one of the main functions of Liang Bua appears to have been for burial of the dead with grave goods, including pots, tools and ornaments.

As our resident bone expert, he said that the radius was from an adult, but was puzzled by its size and curvature.
